A Tangent Circle Family

Problem

Consider the circles

M:(x+1)2+y2=1andN:(x−1)2+y2=9.M:(x+1)^2+y^2=1\qquad\text{and}\qquad N:(x-1)^2+y^2=9.

A moving circle PP is externally tangent to MM and internally tangent to NN; the locus of its center PP is a curve CC.

1. Find the equation of CC. 2. Let ll be a line tangent to both the circle PP and the circle MM, meeting the curve CC at two points AA and BB. When the radius of the circle PP is largest, find ∣AB∣|AB|.
