Property DD Functions

Problem

For a function f(x)f(x) and a real number aa, say f(x)f(x) has property D(a)D(a) if there exists b∈Rb \in \mathbb{R} such that

f(x+a)−f(x)=f(x+b)for all x.f(x + a) - f(x) = f(x + b) \qquad \text{for all } x.

1. If f(x)=sin⁡xf(x) = \sin x has property D(a)D(a), find all possible values of aa. 2. Is there a∈Ra \in \mathbb{R} for which f(x)=2x+3xf(x) = 2^x + 3^x has property D(a)D(a)? Explain. 3. Prove that no function f(x)f(x) with domain R\mathbb{R} satisfies both of the following:

  1. there is a unique a∈Ra \in \mathbb{R} for which f(x)f(x) has property D(a)D(a);
  2. for every q>0q > 0, the function g(x)=f(x)qxg(x) = f(x)q^x is monotonic on R\mathbb{R} (not necessarily strictly).
