Curve Traced by a Sliding Linkage

Problem

figure

A drawing tool is built as follows. OO is the midpoint of a straight slot ABAB. A short rod ONON can rotate about OO, and a long rod MNMN is joined to ONON by a hinge at NN; a pin DD on the rod MNMN can slide along the slot ABAB. The lengths satisfy DN=ON=1DN=ON=1 and MN=3MN=3. As the pin DD moves back and forth inside the slot ABAB, the point NN makes one full revolution about OO (when DD is stationary, NN is also stationary). The tip MM of the long rod traces a curve CC. Take OO as the origin and the line ABAB as the xx-axis.

1. Find the equation of the curve CC.

2. A variable line ll meets the two fixed lines l1:  x−2y=0l_1:\; x-2y=0 and l2:  x+2y=0l_2:\; x+2y=0 at points PP and QQ respectively. If ll always has exactly one common point with the curve CC, determine whether the area of △OPQ\triangle OPQ attains a minimum value. If it does, find that minimum; if not, explain why.
